The Basics
What GLP-1 medications actually do.
GLP-1 receptor agonists mimic a hormone your gut naturally produces, helping regulate blood sugar and appetite. Originally developed for type 2 diabetes, several are now approved specifically for chronic weight management. They’re taken by injection (most brands) or by mouth (Rybelsus), typically on a weekly or daily schedule that your prescriber sets and adjusts over time.

Common questions.
Do I need a prescription for a GLP-1 medication?
Yes. GLP-1 medications are prescription-only in Canada. Your family doctor, nurse practitioner, or a specialist can prescribe one based on your health history.
What’s the difference between Ozempic and Wegovy?
Both contain semaglutide, but they’re approved for different uses and come in different dose ranges — Ozempic for type 2 diabetes, Wegovy specifically for chronic weight management. Your prescriber will recommend the one that fits your situation.
How much does it cost?
Costs vary based on product and insurance coverage. At Lawlor Pharmacy we can help you navigate the most cost-effective option based on your insurance, patient support programs, and by optimizing dosage in collaboration with your prescriber.
What are generics, and are they an option?
Generic semaglutide products are becoming available and may be more affordable. Ask our pharmacists whether one is appropriate for your prescription.
Do you compound GLP-1 medications?
No. We dispense Health Canada-approved brand and generic GLP-1 medications only. We do not compound copies of these medications.

What if I have side effects?
Nausea and digestive changes can occur, particularly when starting treatment or increasing the dose.
